Thank you for the new categories!

Thanks for adding all of those new categories - that should help people find freebies that they're looking for.

Here's something to consider: When I add categories to index pages, I put a sort key of a single space on the categories so that the indexes are sorted to the start of the category page. It's easy to do - at the end of the category tag, add a pipe character and a space (for example, "Category:Dollygirl| " instead of "Category:Dollygirl") It makes a big difference when a category has a large number of index pages, the way Category:Wardrobe does.

Your welcome Rob. But you were the one to identify the subcategories. I just took your idea and applied it. As you know I am a firm believer in auto-generating pages. Keeps you out of trouble but I also know that creating a new page can be a pita.

When in doubt, add the category; we can always figure out what we want later and make changes. We aren't consistent for what we have, too - the rule for "historical" categories like Victorian and Renaissance‎ is to use the most narrow category only (16th century Crossbow Prop has category Renaissance‎ but doesn't have category Historical), but the rule for "wardrobe" categories like Glasses and Jewelry is to use the narrow category and the wider category (DAZ Eastern Dragon Spectacles has category Glasses and category Wardrobe). So we may as well add the categories everywhere that they apply until everybody decides how we want to use them. --Robkelk (talk) 15:25, 25 February 2017 (UTC)

It works!!!!! Yeah I have a sample on my sandbox page. The list starts off with a page that has not been created, Template:Extension DPL, is there a reason for this? Now to see if I can make a page that allows you to fill in the boxes to get a list of possible pages that are of interest. Thank you very much for getting the capability. Hi Dollygirl, I toyed around with this a while today, see: https://poserdazfreebies.miraheze.org/wiki/User:3doutlaw/sandbox I was able to get a hair table (the middle table) that was the "AND" (or intersect) of Hair and Dawn (as a test) but there were two issues: (1) Since the description of the page is just tacked on after the Freebiebox and not indicated by a "Chapter" or heading, I could not get the description to be included cleanly as a table cell. This is not the end of the world, but maybe the Description should start having a heading, so that it can be called out dynamically? (2) There are a lot of Hairs on the Dawn/Hair page that are NOT part of the Dawn category. Since they were added manually to the Dawn/Hair page, as a Re-FIT, per the wording on the page. This means the "intersect" or "AND" of the two categories is less complete than the Dawn/Hair page itself. So instead of doing that, I needed to start with the Category of Hair and "intersect it with the "linksfrom=Dawn/Hair", which worked, but something to be aware of... --3doutlaw (talk) 19:02, 4 April 2018 (UTC)

I did a random drawing and came up with DivaMakeup as the real owner of my gift card.I took out all of images generated by Kerya and me. "Moderation" of posts - anti-spam

Hi Dollygirl!

You probably already notice the site message at the top of the page. I've given you Moderator rights - edits and image uploads from anybody who hasn't edited enough to be autopatrolled will show up at Special:Moderation instead of on the actual wiki pages until a moderator (you, Kerya, or me) approves them.

We don't get very many edits from people who haven't been autopatrolled, so this shouldn't be too much work.

Stupid me did not check all of the captures to see if there were some real download links so I am very glad that you were more diligent then me and now we have most of Dodger's stuff back on line. Yes it is very sad about loosing websites. I am still working on Cho's stuff. Have not heard back from her and her site is still down. She has hundreds of files. I finally have something. {{highlight|this text}} results in this text. The highlighting carries over to DPL results if the highlight is applied to something in a freebiebox. The downside is that you have to apply it to everything that you want highlighted. --Robkelk (talk) 20:03, 29 May 2021 (UTC)

I tried today to get the title from the freebie box to come over highlighted but it did not work. I changed the Pocket Pets - Kitty page title to highlighted and then I changed the dpl statement on the AnimalsGallery-Cats page to display the title under the image. The dpl did not pass the highlight feature through. The title came through but not the background color. I used %TITLE% as the parameter maybe I need to use a different one that will carry through the highlight condition. This is what I used to get the Title to show up «gallery»,\n:File:,¦link=[[%PAGE%¦%TITLE%]]¦%TITLE%\n,\n«/gallery» I added ¦%TITLE% right after the right square brackets. Did some research and found that you can change the color of the text but in our case we would need an if statement that would change the color of the caption. That is way above my pay grade. Category system

Hey Dollygirl, it looks like you handle a lot of the category stuff around here, so I wanted to get your thoughts. The categories for figure-related freebies (hair, clothing, poses, etc.) can be very broad at points, so some categories can get fairly crowded. What would you think about creating subcategories so that freebies can be categorized by the compatible figure and freebie type? For example, instead of categorizing something into both Genesis 8 Male and Pose, it could be categorized into Genesis 8 Male Poses (which would be a subcategory of both Genesis 8 Male and Pose). I'd be happy to undertake that kind of category reorganization if it sounds useful, but wanted outside opinions first. Radiiant (talk) 18:10, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

Hi Radiiant, excuse the long response.

Yes, I do most of the categories. Big picture the crowding effect you are seeing is due to the constraints of the use of the dpl statements that are used throughout the wiki and that we do not have a fully implemented design (vision if you will) of the wiki. Instead of categories we use dpl statements which allow the editor to create dpl statements that will generate a listing of pages that contain both the Genesis 8 Male category and the Pose category. You can see dpl statements at work on Hair/cr2, hr2 and duf conforming and prop hair and the page Victoria 1-2/Poses (similar to your example, figure and pose). The dpl are just simple "and" union statements.

Pros for using this design:

1) Reduces the page size after creating the dpl statements. That seems to be something that Miraheze keeps track of.

2) Allows flexibility for other types of page formats such as picture galleries that are focused on a particular subject. See HairGallery-Free-All

3) Reduces the knowledge load for an editor of the different types of categories needed to complete a page for an item.

4) Automates the updates of pages. You don't have to worry about making sure that Hair A references that are located in six different pages is added or removed or updated because a dpl statement was used on reference pages and does that work for you.

Cons for using this design:

1) This wiki is only allowed to use dpl statements as long as the wiki stays below a total of 40,000 pages. This is a Miraheze admin limitation.

2) The dpl statement only works on pages not on lists of links. That is why the Hair/cr2, hr2 and duf conforming and prop hair page is the way it is.

3) There must be compliance to a standard set of categories when applying a page's categories, i.e. you just can't wing it because you will break the current dpl statements and they will no longer work or be accurate. This constraint also adds to the knowledge load of the editor.

Current status:

I have worked on two projects with the above design in mind.

The first is the Animals page. The top part of the page is generated with dpl statements for each of the subheadings identified in the content list. The second part of the page is just a list of items and their associated links. No pages have been generated for them. The idea is to take an item in the list and create the page and use the appropriate categories of animal types listed in the above groupings.

Project 2 was to take Victoria 1-2 and make it an example of how a figure's pages (landing page, the content, appropriate groupings) were to be structured using dpl statements. The categories are what Rob outlined. By having dedicated pages, this allows an editor that is not familiar with how to create pages for individual content to list something new on the appropriate page and someone else can take that information at a later date and create the page. The information can then be removed from the page because the reference is now a page and the dpl statements will handle getting it to the correct pages, such as a hair item which would need to go in the Hair section, the associated figure section, the free hair page, etc. With Project 2 I realized that I could not keep all of the associated categories in my head anymore so I created a cheat sheet User:Dollygirl/sandbox/CategoryHierarchy. It lists Rob's original set of categories and then through the years of making pages I filled out the hierarchy.

And through the years I and others have added dpl statements here and there.

As to your question I would recommend that you use the dpl statement to join the two categories. If you look at how I created the categories for Hair User:Dollygirl/sandbox/CategoryHierarchy you can see that I focused on types of hair not figures associated with hair. I did this because that type of information was not identified in the current list (at the time) of categories and by adding these new categories to the pages this creates another level of detail in describing content and it is generic enough that it can be used with all hair content not just one figure's hair. So in your example the added categories I would add is to the pose category group and would be something like this: Pose/Sitting, Pose/Laying, Pose/Standing. Doing it this way allows the new categories to be used across multiple figures that have pose sets. I highly recommend when creating a pose page to keep the high level categories in the category list as well. This way you have helped yourself and others with easier identification tags for inclusion or exclusion in other dpl statements. (dpl statements do have limits as to the number of inclusion and exclusion statements you are allowed to use.)

With regards to your work on Adam's animals you did not need to do all that work. You have broken a lot of dpl statements and left some of the wiki pages useless because of the mindset that redundancy in the category list is not necessary and deleting the Adam Thwaites and Animal categories will have no impact. In hindsight, you could have created a page, added the dpl statement, made the page pretty, added the page reference to the landing page(s) you wanted to associate that information to. (such as a new section on the Animals page that listed pages that showcase animals by creator or the creator page.) You're done. If we add any more of Adam's animals as pages, they will show up in your list and any other dpl statement that calls those same categories. I can't stress the importance of control of categories because now you are fiddling with the structure, design of said wiki. When you create a category be mindful of the information you are identifying for a category. If the existing category list contains all of the pieces of information that the new category would collect, then you don't need that category you need a dpl statement. Also we need to assess the impact of removing information, ie what dpl statements have been broken.

All that being said if your aim is to take the wiki another way then we need to talk about what to do, before we do. You are an asset to the wiki. You have ideas that we can use to make the wiki better but all editors of the wiki need to be cognizant of design, of vision. We need to be careful. I don't want you to retreat we all make mistakes and break things. We need your innovation, your enthusiasm, your willingness to do the work. Is it alright if I give some outside context? I've edited at some fairly large wikis (e.g. Wikipedia) over the years, and on a professional level I have some experience with search engine optimization and UX. In those contexts, it's standard practice to place things in more specific categories where possible, because it makes it easier for users to browse site categories and helps search engines understand the site structure. (Truthfully, I've never used DPL statements on a wiki before, so I'm not familiar with how they work and need to read up on it.) Small wikis like this one do things differently, and acting as if they don't lands on me – I jumped in without looking more closely, and I'm sorry about that.

Sure outside context is most important when cementing a team so that they march to the same drummer. It is one of the most important actions in ensuring success of the project. I am guessing that most of your experience was to enhance a business's approachability and useability to an average type client, hence the knowledge about SEO and UX. This information is transferable to this wiki as well, humans being humans and all, however, there are other factors that we might need to consider. This is where it is good to start talk about just what the mission of our wiki is, how to structure the wiki and how to maintain the wiki.

So my outside context is as follows: I too am an editor on the Wikipedia but I have never created a page on the site only edited so I am not familiar with how categorization is decided on but I have some guesses as to what is. I am an engineer. I worked my whole career at a nuclear power plant here in the states, excluding my military service. As an engineer I really dig building things. That leads me to worry about maintaining what I just created so my focus is really pointed towards the underpinning of whatever it is that I help create. My mentor is my husband who is a coder, software designer, computer and electronics designer and builder. So we have many talks about how a wiki should be built. I also have some experience in database design. I have created a number of databases for the group I worked with at the plant and here at home. The database at home is for my collection of freebies, 20,000 items and counting. Go figure. I blame it on the wiki cus we need pictures, right?

When I was working on creating the gallery page design, I saved the following reference pages. Sorry, I promise I'm not ignoring this – I've been trying to create a visualization of what I had in mind re. the category structure, but life keeps interrupting. One thing that might be of interest to you, though: Miraheze (and thus, our wiki) uses DPL3. Since it looks like the documentation on FollowTheScore primarily pertains to DPL2 and hasn't been updated in some time, I dug up some pages with instructions specifically for DPL3, which could be relevant to how we use it here. If DPL3 receives any kind of major update down the line, these pages may be more likely to be updated, too. (Both Fandom and WikiForge are powered by MediaWiki, like Miraheze.)
